What is the difference between AOL and Internet Services?

AOL (and others such as Prodigy) is a commercial online service using proprietary connection software.  Internet Explorer (as well as Netscape) is an application called a browser that allows you to access Internet-accessible information.  The browsers also have an email function.  AOL has limited functionality as a browser in surfing the ‘net, using email, and downloading programs and files.   However, AOL is very user-friendly for beginners to the Internet.

If you are primarily using AOL for email and Instant Messenger™, you might want to consider terminating your AOL service.   The software provided by ISLC installs a dialing connection, the browser Internet Explorer and an email program (Outlook Express with Internet Explorer 4.0x). Instant Messenger can now be used from any Internet connection and is currently available for free to download from AOL. Below is some information from the AOL site about Instant Messenger™.

What is AOL Instant Messenger™?

Instant Messenger shows you a current list of your friends who are online when you are. Simply add your friends to your personal Buddy List, and their names will show up when they are online.

When you see a friend online, you can send him or her an Instant Message by clicking on his or her screen name and typing. When you and your online buddy are swapping messages, it's like being in an exclusive chat room, where you can work together on projects, make lunch plans, or just trade the latest gossip.

Do I need to be an AOL member to use AOL Instant Messenger™?
No, anyone who has Internet access can use AOL Instant Messenger™! All you need to do is register, download the software (can be downloaded from www.aol.com), and install it on your computer. You can use Instant Messenger to talk to Internet users and AOL members, regardless of whether they're using their office or school network or a local Internet Service Provider.

What do I need to get started using AOL Instant Messenger™?
All you need is the Instant Messenger™ software and a computer with a connection to the Internet. AOL Instant Messenger™ runs on your existing Internet connection, so when you connect to the Internet (in the usual way), you can use Instant Messenger™ just like you would use any other Internet program -- by double-clicking the program icon. At home, you probably connect to the Internet by dialing in to your Internet Service Provider. At the office or school, your computer will most likely be connected to a Local Area Network (LAN).
