ESTABLISHING ISLC DIAL-UP
(when Internet Explorer 4.0x or 5.0 already exists on the system)


(Systems with Windows 95 and Windows 98)


Establish Dial-Up Connection:

  • Open My Computer from the Windows 95 or Windows 98 Desktop.
  • Open Dial-Up Networking.
  • Select Make New Connection. Follow the "wizard" instructions for making the new connection. You will need the following information:
  • a. In the field for the name of the computer you are dialing, type ISLC. Make sure your modem is listed in the modem field (it usually is). Click Next.
    b. For the phone number to dial, leave the area code blank (or type 843) and for the number type one of the following numbers local to your area (NOTE: if you are unsure if a number is local to your location, contact your phone company):

    Beaufort:      770-1030
    Bluffton:       757-9805
    Hilton Head: 342-3918

    Ridgeland:   726-3075

    Hampton:     943-4509

  • Click Next.

  • a. The next screen will tell you that you have successfully added the new connection. Click Finish.
  • The Dial-up Networking Screen will remain open. Right-click your mouse on ISLC. Select Properties. Add the following information to each screen.

 

  • General (first screen)
    • Enter your correct dial-up number from above. It is okay if the area code is blank. Make sure your modem is listed.
    • Click the tab or button that says Server Types.

     

  • Server Types
    Fill in the following fields and/or check the required information:
  • Type of Dial up Server = PPP: Windows95, WindowsNT 3.5, Internet (This may be different, depending on your version of windows.)
  • Advanced Options: Check ONLY enable software compression.
  • Allowed Network Protocols: Check ONLY TCP/IP.
  • Click the TCP/IP Settings button.
  • Click OK until you get back to Dial-Up Networking window. Close this window and My Computer.

    Note:if you live in the barracks, before you close Dial-up Networking, right-click the ISLC icon and select Properties. Type 2-3 commas after 770-1030, then type your phone PIN. Click OK. Then, double-click ISLC so the Connect To screen appears. Click Dial Properties and add 9 to access an outside line where indicated. Click OK. Make sure the phone number field reads as follows 9, 770-1030,,,####### (where the # represents your PIN). Click Cancel and then click on the Internet Explorer icon to start the connection process.


    Configuring Internet Explorer:

    Click Start, Settings, then Control Panel. Double-click on Internet.

    • When the first screen opens (General), change the home page address to http://www.islc.net.
    • For Internet Explorer 4.0x: Click Connection (tab at the top). Select Connect to the Internet using a modem. Click on Settings (end of the sentence). Under Use the following Dial-Up Networking connection, click on the down arrow and select ISLC. Type in your username in the open field. Click OK.
    • For Internet Explorer 5.X: Click Connections (tab at the top). The ISLC icon should appear in the Dial-up Settings window. (If there are additional dial-ups that you do not use, you can click and remove them from this window.) Click Settings. Type in your username in the open field. If you click the Advanced button, you can change your idle time settings. Click OK until you get back to the Connections screen.
    • Click Programs tab (both versions of Internet Explorer). Under E-mail (Messaging), choose Outlook Express for both Mail and News. Check or verify that Use Internet Explorer as the default browser is checked.
    • Click Apply, then OK to close the screen. Close Control Panel. Continue with the following to setup the e-mail program.


      Setup for Internet Mail (Outlook Express)

    • Open Outlook Express by clicking: Start – Programs – Internet Explorer – Outlook Express (If a "Connecting To ISLC" screen appears and attempts to dial, click Cancel)
    • If a "wizard" screen appears, skip to Step 5. Otherwise, from Outlook Express, locate the Menu Bar (below the Title Bar, which is the blue stripe across the top of the window). Click:
    • Tools -- Accounts -- which opens Internet Accounts; choose the Mail Tab
    • Three columns are listed: Account – Type – Connection. Click:
    • Add from the choices on the right, then select Mail.
    • A "wizard" program will appear asking for the following information.
    • Display Name
    • Choose a friendly name, for example, John’s Mail, The Smith's, etc. Click Next.
    • Email Address. This must be precise; use lower case (small) letters. For example, jsmith@islc.net
    •  Add your e-mail address. Click Next.
    • E-mail Server Names
    • Incoming mail server (POP3 or IMAP): Type mail.islc.net Outgoing mail server (SMTP): Type mail.islc.net Click Next.
    • Internet Mail Logon
    • Confirm [circle with a dot] Log on using: Account name: your user name, for example jsmith (use lower case letters and do NOT use your e-mail address) Password: small x’s will appear instead of your actual password Click Next.
    • Internet Mail Account Name
    • Type mail.islc.net or any other name you would like to use. Click Next.
    • Choose Connection Type
    • Select Connect using my phone line. (Unless, of course, you are that rare customer who is indeed using a local area network (LAN); If you don’t know, you probably are not.) Click Next.
    • Dial-up Connection
    • Select Use an existing Dial-Up Connection, select ISLC from the list. Click Next.
    • Congratulations!
      Click Finish to save the settings. If you have made any errors, or need to change information, go back into Outlook Express and select Tools -- Accounts -- Mail tab. Then click Properties. Check the information on the following screens: General, Server, and Connection. If you make changes, click Apply, then click OK.

      A couple of things to keep in mind: always use lower case letters when entering your -email address, login name and password. You do not need to enter information for a reply address or organization name (these fields are on the General Screen for Mail properties).
