Configuration of Outlook Express Mail

1. Open Outlook Express by clicking on the Icon on the Desktop. This icon resembles a white envelope, with blue arrows wrapped around it, As pictured here:

If a "Connecting To ISLC" screen appears and attempts to dial, click Cancel. Click cancel on any windows that may appear until you see the Main Window.

2.  From Outlook Express, locate the Menu Bar (below the Title Bar, which is the blue stripe across the top of the window). Click:
Tools -- Accounts -- which opens Internet Accounts; choose the Mail Tab

3.  Three columns are listed: Account – Type – Connection; highlight by clicking once on the Account name associated with the "mail [default]" Type. Click Properties from the choices on the right.

4.  There are three screens which must be examined: General, Servers, and Connection, as follows:

5. Select General.

    1. The first available field asks for "a name by which you would like to refer to these servers." Choose a friendly name, for example, John’s Mail.
    2. The second area is User Information:

Name: type your real name in the usual way: John Smith
Organization: can be left blank
E-Mail Address: must be precise!! For example, jsmith@islc.net
Reply Address: must be left blank
Make sure a check appears next to: "Include this account when doing a full Send and Receive"

6.  Select Servers.

    1. Server information: Both the Outgoing and Incoming must say: mail.islc.net
    2. My incoming mail server is a POP3 server
    3. Incoming Mail Server
    4. [circle with a dot] Log on using:

Account name: this is your user name, for example jsmith; do NOT use your email address, for example jsmith@islc.net

Password: small x’s will appear instead of your actual password

[another circle] Make sure there is NO dot: Log on using Secure Password Authentication

    5. Outgoing Mail Server: make sure there is NO check in the box next to: My server requires authentication.

7.  Select Connection: two blocks of information appear:

    1. Connection: the dot must appear next to Connect using my phone line, unless, of course, you are that rare customer who is indeed using a local area network (LAN); If you don’t know, you probably are not.
    2. Modem: Use the following Dial Up Connection: ISLC must be specified. If something else appears in this field, click on the down arrow at the end of this row, and the choices will appear.

8.  Click Apply, then click OK. If you don’t click OK, all of this work will be for nothing, because nothing will have been saved!
