Fairhaven Fire/Rescue |

Fairhaven is a small seaside town located about 1 hour
south of Boston, next to the fishing city of New Bedford. It was in this town that my
father Jon Byrne retired after 17 years of fighting fire for
the City of Boston. Several of my friends from high school fight fire here either as full
time firefighters or on call firefighters.
Fairhaven Fire Department is a combination fire department employing 22
full time firefighters, 25 call firefighters, and serving a population of about 16,000. 17
of the 22 firefighters are EMTs, 1 a Paramedic and 1 Critical Care Nurse, with 7 more
firefighters scheduled to attend Paramedic school sometime in 2000. 4 are Technical Rescue
Specialists, 8 are Confined Space Rescue Specialists. This is a department that is truly
dedicated to serving its populace.
The Fairhaven Fire Department maintains 7 firefighting apparatus and 2
boats, and responded to approximately 1,600 calls for help in 1998 and their current run
volume is at 1,987, 60% of which is for EMS, for the year of 1999.
