Principal’s Corner

August 9, 2005

Dear Parents,

On behalf of the staff, I would like to welcome all of our new and returning families back to school.  I hope everyone has had a restful, fun summer break and is ready to return for a successful school year.  Our focus at Coosa continues to be in the areas of reading and writing literacy, math, and science. In the area of writing, we are continuing with the Collins Writing Program.  Please come visit often and “read” our walls in the halls and classrooms! With our dedicated staff, motivated students, and involved community, we will accomplish our goal to improve academic achievement for all students.

One of the ways in which parents can become involved in their school is to join the School Improvement Council.  This council meets monthly to monitor and update the Five-Year School Improvement Plan.  This plan focuses on success and improvement for all children.  If you are interested in becoming a member of Coosa’s School Improvement Council, please call me at 322-6100.

I would like to introduce you to new staff members: Ms. Stephanie Richardson, assistant principal; Mrs. Renee Glover, fourth grade teacher; Mrs. Judy Moran, music teacher; Mrs. Michele Dubbs, kindergarten teacher.  We are delighted that they are a part of our school family.

Reminders:

Instructional Day: 8:30 AM – 3:10 PM.  Students are tardy after 8:30 AM.  Students arriving at school before 8:00 AM must be dropped off at the cafeteria entrance.  All exterior doors are locked until 8:00 AM. Coosa has an Early-Care Service; the cost for care from 7-7:30 AM is $1.00 per day per student.

After-School Options:  The Boys and Girls Club has a center at Coosa Elementary that cares for students (First Grade through Fifth Grade) from 3:10 – 7:00 PM, daily.  You may call the Boys and Girls Club to find out about registration and membership.  Coosa has a PreKindergarten/Kindergarten After-Care Program daily from 3:10 – 6:00 PM.  Information for this program will be sent home from our office through the PreKindergarten and Kindergarten teachers.

Car Rider Pick-Up and Drop-Off Area: For the safety of our students, please do not park, mornings or afternoons, in the Car Rider Pick-Up Area.  I encourage you to use the Car-Rider Pick-up Procedure in the afternoons.  If you prefer to park your car at dismissal, please park in the designated parking areas only and wait outside on the left-side of the building for the teachers to exit with their classes.

Car-Rider Pick-up Procedures: (This procedure does work well…please be patient the first few days.)

Drive down the right-hand lane of the Car-Rider Driveway on the right-hand side of the school.

Remain in your car. (Child’s name should be visible on the card in front car window.)

You will be directed (by megaphone) to a numbered space against the curb. Your child will meet you at that space.

An adult will open the passenger door for your child.

You will be directed to exit into the outer lane.

Visitors: For the safety of our children, all exterior doors to the school and mobile classrooms will be locked from 8:30 AM – 3:10 PM, daily.  All visitors during those hours must enter the school through the front entrance, sign-in at the reception desk, and obtain a visitors badge.

Breakfast/Lunch: Breakfast costs $1.00 and is served from 7:45 - 8:20 AM, daily.  Lunch can be purchased for $1.25 per day. Both meals can be paid for daily, or parents can send a check weekly or monthly. Amounts will be kept in an account for the child.  Students may bring their lunch, also.

Coosa Student Folders: A Coosa Student Folder is sent home the first day of school.  Inside the folder you will find important classroom and school information.  Please read this information carefully.  The Coosa Student Folder itself is a very important document.  All school policies and procedures can be found printed on the inside of this folder.  Please review these with your child and keep this folder in a convenient place at home where you can refer to the information during the year.

Beaufort County School District Code of Student Conduct: This booklet is sent home the first day of school. Please review and discuss this document with your child; sign and return the first page.

We look forward to a very successful year.  As always, if you have questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to call.

                                                                                                                                Sincerely,

Cindy Keener
