Nest 02
Another new team member, Jamie Kopp, brought us good luck this morning! Nest 2 was found on a dune at POA 8, but we almost missed it. After a long crawl back and thru the wrack line, which you know is huge this year, the loggerhead crossed over this little dune and on out to the ocean. The sand was disturbed all over the dune so we were sure there was a nest there. So Janie and I probed all around in the circle she drew but just couldn't find it.
We found another crawl at POA 6, but there were no signs of a nest there. Jamie and I walked back to command post to get a stake with ' ? ' on it. (I was anxious to put my BK on any stake!!!) On our way back, Tony yelled for us to get the #2 stake because Karen N. had located the nest. It was actually outside of our original circle, but Karen had seen uprooted grasses, a pretty good sign of nesting activity. Thank you Karen for not giving up. Betsy Koehler, with Janie Lackman, Jamie Kopp, Karen and Tony Natoli, Billy Drysdale and Cyndi White helped too.

Nest 03
As our team headed south today it was cloudy, cool and wet out, but soon we discovered tracks that lead everywhere! This mama was small and had to crawl quite a distance as she circled numerous times to find a nesting area , and then afterwards to crawl back. It appears she was being followed by some other humans, but her tracks took at least 20 minutes to follow, yes that long, they were everywhere! Karen and Linda guided me with my first probe and digging experience. Finally after several tries, I found my first egg and was so thrilled. We were near POA 16 (my lucky number), and decided to leave the nest right there. Tony and Bob helped stake it out!

Saturday, May 19th from Dick Work

Nest 04
While the teams were assembling Sat morning, 5/19/12, and wondering when things would pick up a phone rang and Janie let us know a mama turtle was still on the beach laying her eggs. Mama was in the wrack at the Rock Beauty entrance just where you would make the turn north to patrol Zone 1. Jim Wolbrink and Dick Work went north to do the patrol, check nests 1 & 2, and pick up supplies to mark the relocated nest. Karen Wolbrink and Sally Work stayed with Janie to watch mama finish the nest & return to sea. The South team of Bev Brosnan, Dickie & Martha Blanchard and others who Janie called came down to witness this rare occasion as well. 88 eggs were relocated to a dune just north of the path from Rock beauty with one taken for DNA testing. A great way to start the day. Dick, Sally, Karen, and Jim.

Nest 05
Today's rainy patrol was eventful this morning with new turtler , Pat Earl bringing the North team of Dickie & Martha Blanchard and Janie Lackman luck. Even with the early morning heavy rain, tracks were clearly visible around POA 11. There was also a well defined body pit with clear signs of uprooted vegetation. After an investigation of the area, the nest was found by Pat Earl. Way to go. 106 eggs were in the nest. 1 egg was taken for research and the remaining 105 were relocated to a safer area around POA 8. The nest had two eggs that were much larger than the rest - unfortunately my photo of this did not come out too great. Special thanks to Bev Brosnan from South team that came up to help with supplies!

Mary found this most unusual nest! The mama crawled half way up and was unable to cover all the eggs. No probing necessary. A ghost crab however invaded and we lost about 30 eggs. Mary and Marsha moved 101 eggs back near POA 19. Janie and Tony assisted with everything else. Still Lucky #7 will thrive due to our efforts and the GREAT FRIPP TURTLE PATROL!

A jogger told Rich Combes who was on the north end that they had seen a crawl at [POA 21]. Rick and I walked to [POA 21] and found a long classic crawl. Momma had nested in the wrack and we found it quickly. It was a shallow nest with 119 eggs in it. We relocated the nest to POA 19 which we all hope yields better results than last year. Nest 11
The Zone 2 team was joined today by Atlanta visitors Marcie, Terry & Allie, and they helped find Nest 11. Marcie spotted what turned out to be the exit track just north of POA 23. The entrance track had been washed over and mama crawled over wrack, so it was hard to follow her track. Then Jean K. spotted what looked like a classic body pit at the back edge of the wrack line and, after a few minutes of probing, we found the nest. Because of the possibility of tides over-washing it, we moved the eggs to a dune at POA 19, just south of Nest 9. After taking 1 egg for DNA project, we relocated 79 eggs to the new location. First nest of the year for the Sunday Z2 team of Bev Brosnan, Barbara Cotter, Jean Kohlmayer, and Rich Combes!

Nest 14
The Zone 1 team – Betsy, Christina, Dickie (subbing for Martha), Rich, and Lia, Christina’s granddaughter - found #14 this morning right in front of POA 2 marker. Dickie B. spotted the exit track and it looked as though the turtle had left within a couple of hours of us finding her track. We found no entrance track because of the very high tide last night. There was a big area of disturbed sand at the start of the track, with a number of destroyed eggs on the surface from crabs and possibly a raccoon. While Dick and I were trying to decide where to start probing, Gucci, Renate’s dog, started showing a lot of interest in an area. With one probe in that area we found the nest, which was very shallow. Because of the location near wet sand and shallowness, we relocated 98 eggs to a dune just behind the POA 2 marker. We estimate that at least 10 other eggs were destroyed.

Nest 15
Found this morning just above the wrack line at POA 18. The mama really had us fooled; we probed unsuccessfully, in the body pit near the turn-around and exit. But Dickie finally found the nest very near the incoming tracks. So she laid her eggs, then continued away from the water, made a big mess throwing sand, etc, then turned around and crawled over the whole area and back to the water. Just when we think we have it figured out. 102 eggs were relocated to a small dune at POA 18, next to Nest 12 from last Saturday, and 1 egg for research. Betsy, Judy, and Dickie

Found this morning at POA 8 , 108 eggs were relocated to a nearby dune. There was an egg on top of the sand so no probing was required. It was a very shallow nest and the ghost crabs got there before we did. They only broke two eggs so those shells were saved for research. This was Jamie's first nest to relocate so it was very exciting for us all. Good job team. Nest 25
Judy and John Dayner and their grandkids Brad Dayner and Samantha Crotty, along with the Fripp Turtle Lady, Ms. Lackman – found Nest 25 near POA 2 and relocated it to a dune nearby. John and the kids found the nest, just as two visitors were telling Janie and Judy they watched the mama laying her eggs at about 10:00 last night. Mama found a spot far enough away from the heavy, noisy partying by tourists on the beach, and put 108 eggs in the ground. After Janie dug into the hole left by the crab that got two of the eggs, the two good-looking adults probed the body pit for a while. Then John pushed his stick in and hit the nest on his first probe. We moved 106 eggs into the new nest on the dune, keeping the shells from the other two for DNR. The team, especially the grandkids, had a great morning on the beach. Michael and Pat Beach helped this morning by bringing us the supplies. Thanks, Mike and Pat.

A long crawl just north of the stairway at POA 22 with 2 areas of disturbed sand. The first body pit had an incomplete nest chamber about 10 inches deep. A few feet further up another body pit which looked very promising. Probing that pit proved fruitless but when Bob probed just in front of the second pit he found the nest chamber. The track was narrow indicative of a young turtle and the last 6 to 8 eggs she laid were noticeably smaller than normal. 78 out of the 79 laid were relocated to the area just north of POA 19, the remaining egg being held out for DNA analysis. Nest 37
Bob Freeman found this nest at POA 20. Unusual nest as there were two chambers dug within the same body pit ~8 inches apart. One contained 56 eggs and the other held 17 eggs. The turtle had been observed nesting just after midnight by the family in the picture and we were assured she had not been disturbed. We relocated 72 of  the 73 eggs to a small dune at POA 19. Visitor, Linda F., Bob F., Nephew Matt, Tony N. Marsha P. Karen N., Visitor.

 Inventoried 9/28 (5 dead hatchlings)
