2014 Nest Data

Sunday, May 19 from Judy Dayner

Nest 01 We had our first nest of the season on Fripp today. The mama turtle had a long journey on the beach before finally making a nest near POA 12. We were lucky enough to watch the mama as she returned to the sea. Janie found the nest, and she's showing you the first egg of the season. The nest was left in situ. Patrol members were Janie Lackman, Judy Dayner and Rick Keup. A visitor, Karen Wise-Ackerman helped us follow the tracks to the nest.

Nest 18 at POA 24. The Mama turtle had hit the rocks and turned back towards the water when she found what she thought was a perfect spot, however, we were concerned that it would be washed over with future high tides, so we relocated 132 eggs to a nice dune between 21 and 22. No eggs broken, so we took one for DNA research. The nest was hard to locate as there were many layers of old wrack in the sand. Collins got our supplies, Mallory D, Collins S, Vicki L and Betsy K

Tuesday, June 24 from Cyndi White

Nest 23 We had the first leatherback nest ever on Fripp. The body pit was huge, along with the tracks. Robbie went for supplies while Mary and Cyndi probed . We were lucky to find it quickly, with such a large pit to explore. What a fantastic first nest ever for Linda. The nest was laid at POA 22, There were 77 eggs along with 33 spacer eggs of different sizes. We did not take one for research (the research project is not about leatherbacks). The spacer eggs were put into the new nest approximately where they were in the original nest. The nest had one sloping side (like a slide) with a little bowling out on the other side. It was very deep, close to the top of the probe when put in the hole. Some of the eggs were embedded under a ridge at the top of the nest. The eggs are about the size of a cue ball. Nest 28 ...near the rocks north of POA 26. While mama turtle needed to make her way around a tent that was left up overnight, she did manage to deposit 95 eggs in a shallow nest which was found by one of our rookie turtlers, Lisa Czubernat. Because it was in an area that was in danger of tide wash-over, we relocated the nest to just north of POA 22. So, with one egg taken for DNA testing, 94 eggs are now incubating for the fantastic turtle team of Victoria (Keup) Schafer, Rick Keup, Janie Lackman, Christina Tilton, Lisa Czubernat, Judy Dayner, and Fripp visitor Bill Pickle. A great job was done by Jane M. and Sally W. relocating the 84 eggs to higher ground slightly North of POA 18, next to nest 23. Some of the eggs had a wick like cord attached. Nest 35 We found 12 eggs at the edge of the escarpment near nest 2 at POA 6.
There were no signs of a nest cavity. (The hole next to the eggs in the
photo was dug by me, not by a turtle
!) 6 eggs were white and possibly
viable, so we buried them at stake 35. We buried 5 more away from that
nest that were smelly and yellow. We took one white, broken egg for
research. Inside was a somewhat developed turtle, possibly a month old (but
this is a wild guess!).
