Task List - Turtle Nest Protection Permit Holder

  • March 1 - Apply for Permit.
  • Upon approval - Have brochures printed for the season.
  • Order "T" shirts.
  • April - send out lists serve questionnaire to cull out dead wood.
  • Paint last years sticks, repair signs etc.
  • May - week 1 - Mount beach boxes, brochure bottles, signs etc.
  • Hold organizational meeting.
  • Generate the patrol schedule and email. Wait a week for comments and corrections and do it again.
  • Conduct a beach training session for Newbies with the help of the seasoned members. See training addendum attached.
  • May - week 2 - Send out the start of season memo.
  • Supply the control point with sticks, stakes, mallet, pails, shovel, tape, log book, marking pens, pencils, list of POA locations, etc.
  • May - week 3 Send out the tips memo.
  • From mid May through July and for each nest found;
    • Insure that the documentation in the log book is complete and accurate.
    • Email particulars and update nest data web page and home page nest total.
    • Upload pictures when available.
    • Resupply the control point with sticks and stakes etc.
    • Monitor nest incubation and adjust sand levels as necessary.
  • Bring out Ghost Crab traps and set as needed.
  • Resupply brochure bottles as needed.
  • Monitor nest incubation and record over wash and/or predation.
  • Mail out monthly false crawl and nest totals to DNR.
  • Prepare a nest inventory data sheet for each nest and calculate the hatch date.
  • Box out those nest areas that are deemed problematic with available driftwood prior to the hatch date to prevent hatchling disorientation.
  • Log each nests hatching activity on the data sheet and monitor for Ghost Crab activity.
  • Schedule nest inventories and record the hatching results on the work sheet.
  • Update the nest data web page with the hatching statistics.
  • Upload pictures of the youngsters helping with disoriented hatchlings.
  • August - week 2 - Retrieve log book, unused stakes, sticks, pails, tools, etc.
  • Collate monthly false crawl data from log book for Nest Data Summary Report.
  • August - week 3 - Disassemble control points and remove boxes, etc.
  • September - week 4 - Check all un-hatched question mark nests and remove stakes.
  • Finalize the Nest Data web page and the Home page for the season.
  • October - Compile statistics for Nest Data Summary Report.
  • Prepare Audubon Club presentation with a DVD or equivalent visual aid.
  • Prepare spread sheet for DNR from Nest Data web page and nest inventory data sheets.
  • Prepare project summary  for DNR and mail off all forms.
  • Create a photo album or flash video for the season and upload to web site.
  • Close out the account book and prepare a financial statement for the Audubon Board.
  • Find somebody else to do this next year.
