Activities

Fishing
One of the most popular recreational activities in Pocahontas County is fishing. Eight rivers (the Greenbrier, Gauley, Elk, Cherry, Cranberry, Tygart, Williams, and Shavers Fork of the Cheat) and countless streams flow out of our mountains. These cold and clear rivers and streams are the sites of the finest trout fishing in the state and many are on the state trout stocking program. Native brook trout, small but ferocious, still thrive in several of the county's streams.
The West Virginia Hunting and Fishing regulations can be found at the Pocahontas County Visitor Center in Marlinton or other locations in the county. Licenses are sold in several locations in the county.

Canoeing
The Greenbrier River flows through the entire county, meandering through some of the most beautiful country in the United States. A spring canoe trip down this free-flowing river will be an exciting adventure to long remember. Canoe rentals are available at Appalachian Sport in Marlinton 1-304-799-4050.

Tennis
Pocahontas County offers some of the finest in the region. Snowshoe Resort's Hawthorne Valley Tennis Complex features seven Har-Tru, all weather championship courts that are open to the public at a nominal fee. An on-site pro shop offers racket and ball rentals.

Horseback Riding
Exploring Pocahontas County by horseback could be the highlight of your visit. A number of outfitters in the county offer scenic trips from one hour in length to overnight and multi-day trail rides. Horseback riding is fun for the entire family and outfitters throughout the county offer a wide variety of services.

The Hawthorne Valley Golf Course at Snowshoe
The majestic Allegheny Mountains make the perfect backdrop for the newest attraction to Pocahontas County, the Hawthorne Valley Golf Course at Snowshoe Mountain. Gary Player enhanced the area's rugged natural beauty with a signature course that has been recognized by Golf Digest as the "#2 Golf Course in West Virginia" and Golfweek named it "One of America's Best Golf Courses."
Hawthorne Valley's varying terrain makes it seem as though the front nine and back nine are from different courses. From fairways that follow rolling meadows dotted with tree-rimmed lakes on the front nine to an exciting back nine which offers elevations that vary up to 200 feet from tee to green, each hole has its own distinctive character that adds a new and surprising challenge to your game.
Snowshoe Mountain offers a number of attractive golf packages. Schedule your tee times by calling Snowshoe's Central Reservations at 1-304-572-5252 and discover West Virginia's newest golfing treasure.

Pocahontas Country Club
The Pocahontas Country Club is a challenging 9-hole, par 71 course located on Rt. 219, two miles south of Marlinton. The course is noted for its rolling terrain, excellent greens and scenic surroundings. After a round of golf, visit the clubhouse for snacks and beverages or to relax in the television area to catch up on events around the world. A pro shop is also located in the clubhouse. For more information, call 1-304-799-7466.
