Autobiographical Information

Dr. Edward Peitler is a Licensed Professional Counselor in South Carolina and also holds certifications in alcohol and substance abuse counseling in the States of New York and Georgia. He received his undergraduate degree with a major in Psychology from Manhattan College in New York City.

He took a Masters Degree in Clinical Psychology from St. John's University, New York and, in 1980, he received his Doctorate in Counseling also from St. John's University.

Dr. Peitler worked for twenty-eight years at St. Vincent's Hospital, Harrison, New York beginning in 1968 as a psychiatric technician and then as a Psychology Assistant administering psychological tests and providing individual and group psychotherapy on the inpatient and outpatient units of a private, church-affiliated psychiatric hospital.

During the latter part of the 1970's, Dr. Peitler was instrumental in developing the alcoholism treatment services for St. Vincent's and, after completing program development and providing treatment service to an inpatient rehabilitation program, he went on to develop the Outpatient Alcohol and Substance Abuse Treatment Program at St. Vincent's.

At the time of his departure in 1997 as Administrative Director, Dr Peitler oversaw a clinical staff of over thirty which provided services to almost four-hundred clients at some eight different locations.

Dr. Peitler has also enjoyed a successful academic career, having served on the faculty of three institutions of higher learning in the New York area. He taught Graduate and Undergraduate Child and Adolescent Development in the Psychology Department of the Connecticut State University in Danbury for almost fifteen years, taught in the Department of Psychology at Pace University in the Masters Degree Program for Alcohol and Substance Abuse Counselors

In 1995 was asked by the Dean of the Education Department at Manhattan College, New York to write and implement the curriculum for a Master's Program in Alcohol and Substance Abuse Counseling. This program was accredited by the New York State Office of Alcohol and Substance Abuse. He left the College teaching faculty in 1997 with the rank of Assistant Professor.

Dr. Peitler has appeared on both radio and cable television programs as discussant on a wide variety of topics related to alcohol and substance abuse and topics of general interest to the public.

Dr. Peitler is currently the Coordinator for the Employee Assistance Program at Memorial medical Center in Savannah, Georgia providing intervention, consultation, assessment and brief counseling services to the employees of Memorial and their families.
