Ordinarily, charges for counseling services are determined for each session. There are advantages and disadvantages for this kind of arrangement. One of the advantages is that an individual can opt for as much counseling as he or she might want to spend. The disadvantage is that individuals are likely to cancel sessions or to shorten their involvement in counseling simply on account of financial considerations. This can sometimes mean that they do not get the full benefit of the treatment, making it more likely that the problems might continue or return at some later time.
One financial arrangement available to clients is to pay a lump sum fee for the counseling, rather than for each session. It is similar to what we are familiar with when we seek medical assistance. A doctor sees us for a medical procedure - for example, cataract surgery or to mend a broken bone and charges a fee for the procedure. Usually preliminary and follow-up office visits are included in this fee. The advantage of an arrangement such as this is that an individual completes the treatment when the problem has been resolved to their satisfaction. In this type of arrangement an individual may access treatment session for as many times as the counselor and they feel is necessary within a twelve-month period.
In cases where an individual only wishes to be seen in a one or two session consultation, single session fees may be assessed. Insurance coverage where applicable can be used to cover the costs of counseling.
